The castle, which dominates the town, was built under Wolf Rumpf between 1590 and 1606, presumably based on an initial design by the imperial architect Pietro Ferrabosco, on the site of the old Kuenring family town castle.

The master builder was “Meister Anton” from Vienna. The former manor house acquired its current form—with four gables on each of its narrow sides—following a fire in 1757, which also destroyed the tower’s tall onion dome.
