narrow-gauge railway
A truly unique train ride: Take the traditional narrow-gauge railway through the enchanting Waldviertel region.
Easy to reach: The narrow-gauge railway station is just 1.5 km from the hotel. You won’t forget this ride for a long time!
Let's go!
A journey of discovery for the whole family: Experience pure nostalgia on a trip aboard the historic narrow-gauge railway. For 120 years, steam and diesel locomotives have been puffing and chugging between Gmünd, Groß Gerungs, and Litschau through the far north of Lower Austria: powerful and cozy, just like the Waldviertel region itself.
The Waldviertelbahn follows a stunning route through forests and fields, past ponds and imposing granite boulders—a nostalgic journey for the whole family that offers a whole new perspective on the Waldviertel region. Numerous stops along the way invite you to explore, linger, and marvel.
There’s plenty for children to discover along the route. It all starts with the Waldviertelbahn Puzzle Rally: Colorful display boards at the stations offer information presented in a child-friendly way—the mascots Lisa and Paul share interesting facts about the historic narrow-gauge railway and its region, while also providing valuable clues for the puzzle rally. The colorful train coloring book—a gift for all young guests—tells the story of the Lower Austrian Railways and helps pass the time during the ride. On trips with the Diesel Nostalgia Train, the children’s play car is also on board.
The diverse program of events and the many excursion options available with the vintage train set—complete with a diesel or steam locomotive and a snack car—make a family outing on the Waldviertelbahn a memorable experience every time. A ride on the Golden Railcar is also exciting; here, the train drivers double as tour guides and provide entertaining commentary on points of interest and hidden gems along the route. A sporty bike ride can also be perfectly combined with a leisurely train ride, making it ideal for every fitness level.
Season
The Waldviertelbahn runs from April through November and also visits regional Advent markets during its Advent trips in December.
