Rappottenstein has been of great importance from the very beginning: The castle is situated at the heart of the extensive Kuenring estate, serving as a stable center during turbulent times. At the same time, it protected the ancient trade route—traces of which can still be found in the municipal area today—that ran from the Danube through the Nordwald (an old name for the Waldviertel) toward Bohemia.
